Perched on the Northwest corner of 9th Avenue and 20th street is La Bergamote, a delectable bakery in the heart of Chelsea. When I was an intern at CBS News last spring, one of my bosses introduced me to this French patisserie and its incredible chocolate almond croissants. Seriously, these are the best croissants you will eat. Ever.
La Bergamote is not as crowded as the Ace Hotel, or as small as Cafe Grumpy. It’s European, with clean lines, dark woods, and brightinteriors. As a college student, it’s a big plus when you’re allowed to sit and read as long as you want. At La Bergamote, the staff won’t kick you out for staying an hour or four. I brought my Political Economy homework and the Best Poems of the 20th Century and camped out next to a window in the dining room for the entire afternoon without interruption.
Tip: Try an expresso and a pastry.
Prices: $$, not cheap, but not too expensive- $3.50 for their infamous almond croissant.
Food: Sandwiches, pastries, and cakes at the bakery in Chelsea. The Clinton location is a restaurant, open for lunch, dinner, and brunch!
