I love Penelope Cafe, probably because it’s one of the few decent, and not incredibly expensive, restaurants in my corner of town. Mismatched chairs-and even a church pew-fill the the interior of the bakery/restaurant/bar. With bright teal beadboard that crawls halfway up the walls and crisp cream paint on the other half, Penelope almost looks as if it should be in the Hamptons. But it’s not. Penelope’s is on 30th and Lexington near Kipps Bay/Murray Hill on the East side of town. Prepare for an hour wait on the weekends; it’s that tasty. Otherwise, expect to wait 10-20 minutes for a table.

Price: Reasonable ($7-$15 for any meal).

Food: Breakfast, Brunch (on the weekend), Lunch, and Dinner, but it’s best as a breakfast/lunch spot…it’s a bar and bakery too!

WiFi: Puh-lease. This isn’t one of those sit down and work places. Don’t be a loner here, bring some friends, try a glass of wine, and enjoy a Chicken Curry Salad, or Warm Pear and Brie sandwich.

Hours: 8am-12am daily.

Tip: Penelope’s doesn’t take reservations, so if you want to eat on a weekend morning, get there as early as possible. Also, the coffee is not incredible, but it is bottomless (like The Grey Dog) for just $2.
