Perched on the North East corner of Bowery and 2nd Street in the East Village (on the same block as John Derian) is Peels, a homey restaurant/bar/bakery perfect for a coffee break, dessert, lunch, and the traditional New York Sunday brunch. Organic ketchup comes in stout glass bottles and the jam is homemade. Adorable storefront. Cozy decor, ambient indie music playing in the background, decent service, overall good atmosphere. Full bar, bakery, and appetizers probably are the highlight of the place.

Tip: Brunching it? Expect a wait, but you can make a reservation to ensure you won’t have to wait outside in the winter cold for a table.
What should I order? Fried Chicken Sandwich (perfectly fried, with pickles, a spicy horseradish mustard to dress it up, and is served with a side of salty home cut fries). If you’re in the mood for seafood, try the Shrimp and Grits, if you need a good southern meal order the Biscuits and Gravy mmmmm-you can’t go wrong!! If you’re coming for breakfast, make sure to order a dughnut-it’s stuffed with caramelized bananas and is dusted with coconut shavings. I know you’re drooling-I am too. Don’t accuse me of blasphemy, but these doughnuts may be better than those at the Doughnut Plant!
Grab and go? Yes, you can order food to-go if you want, but it’s more fun to sit and eat.
